When You have Doubts
The Certificate of Parentage is a legal document so if there are any doubts that the
man planning to sign the Certificate of Parentage is
the natural father of the child, get a genetic test first. The newest methods
of genetic testing don't even require blood to be drawn. A genetic sample is taken from
the mother, the potential father and baby by swabbing inside the mouth. This method is
called the "Buccal Swab" and is the method used in New Jersey.
If you decide you would like to have a genetic test, you can contact a private laboratory or if you would like some assistance, you can call the Paternity Opportunity Program at the telephone number listed below. Click here for more information on establishing voluntary paternity or call the Paternity Opportunity Program Office at 1-800-POP-6607.
