When to Establish Voluntary Paternity

Unmarried parents may establish paternity by signing a Certificate of Parentage while the mother is pregnant, at the birth of the child in the hospital or anytime after. However, if you're an unmarried parent, you should only sign the Certificate if:
You understand what your rights and responsibilities will be once the Certificate is signed.

There is no other man that could be the father. If there are any doubts that the man who is planning to sign the Certificate is the father, get a genetic test before signing the form.
